Who is eligible?
You do not need to be listed on the Public Authority Registry to be an IHSS Provider; however, in order to be an IHSS Provider, you must pass the Department of Justice (DOJ) background check and have attended the County Orientation. Being a Provider requires no prior experience, only dedication to those in need while offering flexibility and rewarding relationships. As of January 2020, IHSS workers earn $14.75 an hour and have access to medical benefits for helping people with domestic chores and personal care.
The Registry is a referral service only that helps recipients find providers. Being listed on the Registry does not guarantee work.
If you are interested in applying to the Registry see our Criteria for Acceptance.
How the Public Authority Registry works for Providers!
The Public Authority Registry works to recruit eligible and experienced providers to refer to recipients. To be considered for the Registry, providers must pass the Department of Justice (DOJ) background check and attend the County Orientation.
Important
Although, as a provider, your paycheck comes from the State of California, the person you are providing the care to is your employer. This individual is responsible for hiring, training, supervising and – if need be – firing their provider(s).
The Public Authority is not your employer. The IHSS Public Authority is the employer of record only for purposes of negotiations with the Union.
