Public Authority Training Program
Free training courses and workshops on providing homecare services through IHSS and how the IHSS program works.

Who is eligible?
Current IHSS Providers in Alameda County and those accepted and active on the Public Authority Registry are eligible for Public Authority training.
Is training required?
All Public Authority training classes are voluntary.
The IHSS program does not require providers to take skills training classes. The only required class is a one and a half hour IHSS Orientation that must be completed before one is paid to work as an IHSS provider. This orientation is offered by Adult and Aging Services/IHSS Program, not the Public Authority for IHSS.
The Public Authority Registry does not require specific classes in order to be referred out to recipients, unless clearly requested during the interview process. Participation in the Public Authority workshops and classes may improve your chances of being accepted on the Registry and employed by IHSS Recipients who use the Registry to connect with providers.
Core Workshop & Class Descriptions
IHSS Basics
Learn who employs IHSS providers, what job duties you might perform, how to be successful in an interview, and how to negotiate a job agreement. Participants learn about recipient rights including a recipient’s right to appeal a cut in their hours. You will also learn about medical conditions common for people who are elderly.
Caring for Yourself, While Caring for Others
In the second half of the IHSS Basics class, you learn how to keep yourself safe on the job using a new guide to health and safety, created just for IHSS Providers in Alameda County. You will receive a free copy of the guide and learn many new tips and tools for keeping yourself and the recipient safe!
First Aid & CPR
Learn how to prevent, prepare for and respond to workplace emergencies. Participants receive certification for successful completion of the course.
Provider Class
The Public Authority collaborates with community agencies to offer provider classes. This class takes place over 4 weeks and includes 24 hours of instruction. Instruction covers: Exploring the basics of aging and disabilities, understanding independent living philosophy, assisting with medications and nutrition, maintaining good hygiene and personal care skills, building and keeping good relationships and practicing health and safety on the job.
Occasional workshops on other topics are also offered.
